Education Policy in India – What does it has to do with mental wellness?
The national education policy has seen a lot of changes in decades. But, the current policy is almost revolutionizing the education system of the country as far as the stuff in the paper are concerned.
The British education system employed in India is to create an obedient working-class mass for their operation. Once they sailed off, the system should have been replaced. Sadly, it operates till date.
“Other than the language, everything from the British must be thrown off.”
-Sadh guru
Already been a week since announcement, we dive deeper into understanding the mental wellness the new education system in India affect.
1. 1.5+3+3+4 not 10+2
It may resemble primary mathematics but this is the new pattern of curriculum of education. The previous system of 10+2 is 10th grade (10 years) and 12th grade (11 & 12 – 2 years). In some cases it is 10+3, three years of diploma in polytechnic institutions. This is to be replaced by 5+3+3+4.
Pattern |
Grade |
Education |
5 |
1-5 | Primary |
3 | 6-8 | Secondary |
3 | 8-11 | Higher Secondary |
4 |
Graduation |
The two board exams in 10th and 12th grades are now superseded by 11th common evaluation. This will be a sigh of relief for students where they have to undergo a lot of stress for two times with just a year gap.
Also, now we can complete schooling before a year. This pattern is quite visible across the nations particularly in the USA and Europe.
This move takes off weight from the pressure cooker.
2.More spending on education
A bit of financial data: Government spends about 1.5 % of the total GDP on education. But, now the spending is going to be 6 % of the total GDP.
This means a lot of resources will now be diverted towards the education. Like the teacher training, syllabus, digital platforms, Infrastructure research and most importantly Intellectual Property.
“No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher.”
-The Karate Kid
What a well-qualified teacher with proper facility can deliver is near ideal. The level of apprehension will be higher from a most trusted source.
3.Flexibility of Studies
Consider a four-year engineering course opted by the student. If he/she breaks out at the end of each year.
Year | He/She Will get |
I | Basic Certification |
II | Diploma Certification |
III | Advanced Diploma Certificate |
IV | Degree Certification |
He/She can carry on with next year of education in the institute with a break in the same or any other university in the nation. Thereby, dropouts will be reduced in the near future.
And, There is a choice-based credit system that is being implemented in some institutions will now be across the nation. We will be given a list of choices to choose from.
“Education is not the piling on of learning, information, data, facts, skills, or abilities – that’s training or instruction – but is rather making visible what is hidden as a seed.”
– Thomas Moore
Based on the individual’s preference, the choice will be chosen. The rigidity of the system has been a problem for decades. And, that has now been changed.
4.Vocation as a Profession
“If we want boys to succeed, we need to bring them back to education by making education relevant to them and bring in more service learning and vocational education.”
-Michael Gurian
The proposed system clearly understood the core of vocational studies. The vocational studies is just like a hobby that will be examined.
The extra-curricular will be graded in the academic progress. And, there are no limitations on the vocation that needs to be chosen.
It is an excellent move to counter both stress involved in the education and also the platform to nurture the talent of the student. Take the case of westerners, they perform activities like plumbing, carpentry and electrical activities on their own (pertaining to basic household stuffs).
Without a doubt, this is a stress buster.
5. Sports gets marks
Replacing the physical training hour with mathematics is a well-known tale in India.
Sports is an activity where people exhaust their energy at will. In times of higher mental fatigue, sports is sure shot recovery tool. The emphasis is reduced in years due to increased academic demands of society.
The new national education policy grades the sports. In other words, it can’t be ignored for another.
6.Major and Minor Specialisation
Now, we can study a career-minded as well as passionate specialisation for the degree. This will create a mental balance in the minds of students.
It is often the courses took by external pressures leads to fatal suicides of aspirants. Now, we got a balance for career and passion-based studies.
7.Single Authority Syllabus
The new education policy cuts down CBSE, ICSE, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and many more for a common education system across the country.
The prior complexity involved in the syllabus and resource is now unified. The parents don’t need to dodge their head to find the board of study for their progeny.
The disparity of one population having access to one form of education while others become a victim due to many circumstances will not be an issue henceforth.
So, what’s in the bag? It remains unknown. Whether it is possible? Highly. How? Networking of various school connecting both socially and digitally with the aid of technology.
Since, we are crushing a century-old system, a system foolproof is required to take its place. But can take place in an instant? Definitely no.
We need to be adaptive and welcome change. Culminating changes now and then will create a system that can put Indians in the radar of global opportunities.
India has long held the worst spot in the world happiness index listing, now it’s time to move ahead. It’s time for a change and the change is here!
