The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired a new version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile off the coast of Odisha in Balasore, as reported by the ANI News.
Defence sources also reported the news agency ANI that the missile was equipped with new technological developments which were successfully proven.
The launch was carried out by the Brahmos Aerospace in close coordination with DRDO teams. The DRDO in a statement said that the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with enhanced indigenous content and improved performance was successfully test fired at 10:30 am from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
Appreciating the DRDO officials on their successful accomplishment of the testing process, Union defence minister Rajnath Singh said that it “reconfirmed the robustness of the Indian Navy’s mission readiness”.
BrahMos as it is classified is a joint-venture of India-Russia, between the DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya.
The missile is named after the two rivers in their respective countries: the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva of Russia.
Prior to this, on January 11, the DRDO had successfully test-fired a naval variant of the BrahMos missile from INS Visakhapatnam which is the latest warship inducted to the Indian Navy recently.
“Advanced sea to sea variant of BrahMos Supersonic Cruise missile was tested from INS Visakhapatnam today. The missile hit the designated target ship precisely,” DRDO official had said.
It is notable that India has already deployed a substantial number of Brahmos missiles in several strategic locations.
