The Author

The book I suggest is ” The Autobiography of a Yogi “, written by Paramahansa Yogananda. This book takes us through the spiritual journey of Mukunda Lal Ghosh that made him Paramahansa Yogananda.

The author was born in Gorakhpur, India into a Bengali family on Jan 5, 1893, published the book in 1946 by Rupa publications under the genre Non-fiction or spirituality

The author describes his life events in this amazing book. He writes about his experiences with great Yogis and his spirituality.

They cured the Author of a deadly disease because of the grace of his parent’s guru. And shortly afterwards, he experiences a spiritual vision which serves as the seeds for his desire to visit the Himalayas.

Those seeds germinate when his mother dies and leaves a message through his brother regarding what her guru had said about the author’s future when he was a newborn baby. Then a cat-and-mouse chase ensues between him and his brother as the author tries to get away from his family to make it to the Himalayas. Will he succeed in his plan or does his brother’s sleuthing ability triumphs his elaborate plan?

The author, during his teenage, meets several spiritually enlightened souls who had abilities beyond normalcy. At one instance, he meets a person who could be at two distinct places at the same time. Every person he meets help him take those mini-steps to self-realization, his goal.

In the chapter, ” Two Penniless Boys in Brindaban “, wonderful events happen just because of his confidence in God. This event proves to be important in his life as it helped him get his brother’s approval in his search for spiritual enlightenment. Shortly before these events, he meets his Guru Sri Yukteswar. Sri Yukteswar starts him into Kriya Yoga.

His years with his Guru written over a series of chapters deals with how enlightened his guru is and the knowledge he gives to the author. Because of this wonderful relationship, the writer gets to meet the one great Mahavatar Babaji, a yogi who has been said to be alive for many centuries.

The later chapters of this book “The Autobiography of Yogi” deal with the western visit of the author and the starting of many Kriya Yoga foundations across the globe.
