JOHNNIE WALKER WHISKY IN PAPER BOTTLES FROM 2021

200 years old international Scotch whisky brand Johnnie Walker will be available in plastic-free paper bottles from 2021, said its parent company Diageo plc and this initiative is predominantly to tackle plastic waste been generated through plastic bottles.

Diageo said that the paper bottles will be manufactured from a sustainably sourced pulp of wood and whisky will be sold in those bottles in a trial basis initially in 2021. Diageo has partnered with the venture management company Pilot Lite to launch a firm named Pulpex to produce these bottles, which will also produce paper bottles for companies like Unilever and PepsiCo.

Most of the beverages based company, market their products in plastic which in turn damages the ecosystem on a large scale. Since the heavy damage being made, companies are under large pressure to reduce the content of plastic being used to manufacture bottles and this initiative by Diageo proves to change the dynamics of bottles being manufactured to store beverages.

Earlier in the announcement, Ewan Andrew, the chief sustainability officer at Diageo said that they are proud to have created this world first and they are constantly striving to push boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be groundbreaking.

Diageo along with Unilever and PepsiCo has set its target to reduce its previous plastic waste of 5% in its total packaging as part of the United Sustainable Development Goals program by 2025. Diageo has already announced that its Seagram 7 Crown whiskey will be bottled in recycled plastic shows their constant effort to produce sustainable whisky bottle.
