Kiran Mazumdar Shaw named EY World Entrepreneur of the Year 2020
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, the Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon Limited has been named as the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year 2020. She has been selected from among 46 nominations and from 41 countries. She became the third Indian to win the title after Uday Kotak of Kotak Mahindra Bank in 2014 and Narayana Murthy of Infosys Limited in 2005. She is also the second woman to hold the title following Olivia Lum of Hyflux Limited from Singapore in 2011.
Biocon Limited is India’s largest Bio-Pharmaceutical Company based in Bangalore. It was founded in the year 1978 by Mazumdar Shaw with an initial capital of $500 and with just two employees. The Company has now become one of Asia’s leading Biotech Companies with a workforce more than 11000 employees.
In 2014, Biocon became India’s first Biotech company to go public and the second Indian company which crossed $1 Billion mark on the first of day of its listing.

After the award announcement, Mazumdar Shaw has stated that her business focus was Global Healthcare with the provision of universal access to life-saving medicines. She also said that it is the responsibility of all entrepreneurs to contribute to the world around them and the communities in which they operate.
Mazumdar Shaw also added that women are playing a significant role in the Economic Development but their contribution had been ignored for a very long time. She said that it was important to use the platform of EY World Entrepreneur of The Year to encourage more women to participate in entrepreneurial pursuits.
