Uber fires employees amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had already severely affected the economy and made many people jobless. This has affected almost all the sectors of the economy because many companies are announcing layoffs, pay cuts, etc.
Uber fires employees – considered as a ruthless move
There has been a lot of mental pressure and confusion among the employees because Uber has ruthlessly fired 3700 employees over a zoom video call. The employees are completely dissatisfied because they didn’t even care to give prior notice.
Ruffin Chaveleau, head of Uber’s customer service, said, “We are eliminating 3,500 frontline customer support roles. Your role is impacted and today will be your last working day with Uber,”. Adding to this, Uber has also said that their business has reduced by half because of this lockdown and many customer support employees have little work. It is believed that Ruffin Chaveleau was very upset, and she almost broke down during the call. She thanked the employees for their contributions to Uber so far and she claimed that it was difficult for her to be at the receiving end.
Many employees have expressed their dismay towards Uber. Uber has received a lot of criticism for the way it had fired so many employees. This will create chaos in the mind of the employees who are still working too.
The company’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi conducted a meeting with the board of directors and relinquished his salary for the rest of the year, until December 31, 2020. Uber has also conveyed that it is never easy to let go of an employee and this unprecedented situation has made them undergo many hardships.
Uber reported a net loss of $2.9 million in the first quarter of the year. But the revenue reached $3.54 billion in the Q1, which is 14% higher than the previous year.
