The massive global killer CORONA virus triggered a forced lockdown for the whole world. The people of developing countries like India are likely to suffer more in the present and soon due to this lengthy lockdown. Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy says that the deaths due to hunger will overtake the COVID deaths if this lockdown goes on extends like this. He also says that Indians have to work for 60 hours a week in the next 2-3 years to bring back the economy.
Murthy says that so far India manages to flatten the curve and is doing well compared to many developed countries. He also quotes data that average deaths in India account for 9 million because of various reasons while the COVID deaths account for approximately 1000 in the last 2 months. He also adds that there is no need to panic with this data.
Lockdown locks livelihood
Narayana Murthy said that the number of Indians employed in unorganized and self-employed categories accounts for 190 million. This is a huge share of the population. This lengthy lockdown will lengthen the hunger and shorten the savings of these people. An estimation by the International Monetary Fund says that India’s GDP will drop down to 1.4% compare to 4.5% in the last year. Murthy said that Indian business lost 15-20% of the revenues which will have a drastic impact on the tax and GST collected by the government.
Follow data than opinion
Narayana Murthy says that instead of confusing with the diversified opinion and emotion regarding lifting the lockdown we can follow the way that data shows. NASSCOM is also trying to adopt a data-driven strategy to bring back the employees to work. Murthy suggests that instead of accumulating the employees with 2 shifts we can split the employees into 3-4 shifts with proper safety measures and social distancing. He also suggests that it will be a great relief to MSME’s if banks guarantee loans for them.
Work from Home
Regarding work from home Murthy says that productivity is the main target of this crucial situation. With well-defined standards and targets for each designation, it is better to work from anywhere.
“COVID and HUNGER are two guns targeting everyone’s life.”
It’s time to pack all the ideas relating to emotions and myths. Instead we should focus on the bitter truth what the data says.
