Aarogya Setu’s source code revealed
The coronavirus contact-tracing app Aarogya Setu’s source code is going to be made public for Google’s Android phones considering the security of the users. What is a source code? A source code is the instructions in programming that is used to run an app.
The smartphone users in India approximately accounts for 500 million. The Aarogya Setu’s source code for ios version will be released in the next two weeks stated by the technology ministry of India.
Aarogya Setu’s core principles point to transparency, privacy, and security. The CEO of government think-tank NITI Aayog stated in a news conference that revealing the source code publicly to the users highlights the government’s transparency.
The Aarogya Setu app was launched by the government of India as a preventive measure to alert people regarding the coronavirus spread. Currently, 115 million people use the Aarogya set app. The app works in such a way that it uses GPS and Bluetooth to alert the users when they come close to infected patients.
A French hacker also tweeted in twitter about the flaws of Aarogya set and insisted the government to make the source code public. The public policy advisor of Mozilla firefox Udbhav Tiwari said that still had some ground to be covered before the source code is made open.
The app is widely used by people in various sectors. However, it loosened the compulsory use of the app by office workers due to a claim by advocates. The app was initially launched in such a way that it can be accessed only in Andriod smartphones and Apple. But now it can be accessed even in phones with cheap internet connections like KaiOS.
